Win puts Olympic in box seat to make cup final PDF Print E-mail

Sydney Olympic scored an easy 2-0 win over a flat-looking Manly United in Round 4 of the 2008 Johnny Warren Cup.

The win keeps Olympic's unbeaten record in tact and also puts the club in the box seat to make the final, with the last round robin game against West Sydney Berries who have had a horrid start to their 2008 season.

Olympic's performance was not as slick as that of Wednesday night but that can be attributed to the pitch that felt like a spongecake.  Despite this Olympic imposed a dominant attitude particularly in the first half and that's where the major damage took place.

Wearing the captain's armband for Olympic was new recruit Mirko Jurilj who had another exceptional performance at the back and he seems very happy where the team is heading.

"Milan (Blagojevic) has got a good blend of experience and youth and although pre season training was hard we've enjoyed it and were are looking very fit and ready to go", Jurilj stated after the match.

"Not panicking and being calm at the back is part of my game. It's just the way I play.  As long as we have our shape, things will fall into place".

It didn't take long for Olympic to strong-arm their way into the game and things got close in the 4th minute when Michael Cindric should have converted at the back post from close range after an Olympic corner flew through the crowded penalty area.

Cindric got his revenge only three minutes later from an identical chance but this time a bit higher allowing him to head past the hapless Manly keeper Brad Swancott.

Olympic's power play rolled on and the chances kept coming.  A double chance in the 12th saw Marino Musumeci attempting to slide a ball past Swancott but the keeper parried and cleared, then Roger Galayini hit a long ranger that went just wide.

Matthew Mayora sent a shot from distance in the 16th but it was too high. In the 20th Musumeci missed one of those chances that are harder to miss than score.  From close range he failed to double the lead but the ball did come to him as a surprise.

Moments later Olympic launched another now-familiar raid.  Galayini pumped a mid range ball upfield that was well chested down by Paul Wither.  He turned and slid a ball for Mayora who hit a first-timer that forced Swancott into another reflex save.

Olympic keeper Michael Herbet had to put his deck of cards down in the 25th to deny Manly's Midgely with a great save.

Manly's task became even harder when Olympic deservedly took a 2-0 lead in the 27th.  Wither was brought down after foraying towards the penalty area and Shannon Cole stepped up to send a ripper free kick into the top left corner that left Swancott with no chance whatsoever.

Luck was with Olympic a minute later when a Manly effort shook the right upright and the ball crossed the face of goal.

In the 37th Musumeci found himself one-on-one with Swancott but his touch to round the keeper was too hard and was subsequently forced too wide.

Manly somewhat started getting into the game and could have halved the deficit in the first minute after the break when Mihaljovic struck a bolter that Herbert had to push around the right post.

Cole was at it yet again with another long range free kick that Swancott had to tip over the bar in the 53rd.

The interchange rules saw many changes made, including Milorad Simonovic on for Chris Triantis and Siraj Al-Tall for Musumeci.  Al-Tall got into the game quickly and had a good chance when beating three players but sprayed his shot over the bar.

In the 67th Cindric sent a powerful header cannoning off the right upright and the ball again flew across the goal but not in.  The fans in the stands had written the header as 3-0, and Cindric again was just off target with another header in the 79th.

News filtered through that the West Sydney Berries (Olympic's final opponent in the round robin) were getting hammered 5-0 by Bankstown City and this gave the Olympic fans great optimism of a first final appearance for several years, something that Mirko Jurilj can look forward to.

"We are happy.  We want to win every game we play and it will be good if we can go on and win the final and go from there".
