SYDNEY OLYMPIC: CLUB CHAMPIONS 2008 PDF Print E-mail
Sydney Olympic Football Club has clinched the Club Championship for 2008 in what has been a remarkable year for the club.

The Club Championship is the true definition of a club's all-round success across all grades from 1st grade down to U15s. Points earned by the senior teams are weighted with 1st grade points being multiplied by 5 and U20s points multiplied by 2.

Sydney Olympic won the Club Championship by 5 points. Four out of the five teams which contribute to the Club Championship race have made the semi finals. This result is testimony to the last few years in which the Club has slowly built the foundations to support its clear strategies and direction to once again become a force in Australian football.

Sydney Olympic provides opportunities to young players through their Premier Youth teams or affiliations with other Clubs such as Olympic Eagles and Belmore Hercules. Sydney Olympic's partnership with the Eastern Suburbs Football Association has also played a key role in attracting some of the state's best talent. Sydney Olympic, along with its key partners will continue to provide a pathway for young players to progress through the age groups and into the NSW Premier League and onwards to the A-League.

The Club boasts having provided the A-League and overseas clubs with a plethora of players in recent times such as Brett Emerton, Nick Carle, Tim Cahill, Jason Culina, Andrew Durante, Jade North, Michael Beauchamp, Dylan MacAllister, Iain Fyfe, Clint Bolton, Tarek Elrich, Tom Pondeljak, Andrew Packer, etc

A huge thankyou to all who have contributed in any way to realise this great achievement.

Our teams in summary:

U13s: Had a disappointing year finishing second last but showed some resilience towards the end of the season only losing 2 games in the last 6. They were faced with challenges from the outset but will be looking for an improved performance next season.

U14s: Started off very slowly but began to their rhythm a third of the way in. They showed they had the potential to have qualified for the semi finals but the poor start proved costly as they finished just outside the top 5.

U15s: Were consistently in semi final contention and it was no suprise to see the team finish 4th just a point behind 3rd spot. They enter the semi finals in good form with 2 wins against fellow top five aspirants where they will meet fifth placed Marconi.

U16s: Were never too far away from semi final action and made a big play to edge into contention with a run of 6 games with only one defeat. However, a losing streak at the end of the season came as a major disappointment for a team expected to do better.

U18s: Performed very well in the first two thirds of the season losing only 2 games in 13. Were always edging into the top three but never managed to get a firm footing and slipped a couple of notches at the end. Finishing 5th in the end and are also competing in the semi finals again against Marconi.

U20s: The Club's most successful team in 2008 and rightfully crowned minor premiers finishing 5 points clear of its nearest rival. The players and coaching staff can be extremely proud of their efforts. Pat Marando has again showed his credentials as a quality coach not only with success on the field but through providing many of his players a chance to represent first grade.

1st Grade: A huge turnaround for the team from last season providing much joy to the success- starved fans. Finishing 3rd on the table means a semi final showdown with Wollongong. Only a win away from being minor premiers, they have the potential to go all the way and win the premiership. They have already captured the Johnny Warren Cup and are in the Grand Final for the Tiger Turf Cup. Milan Blagojevic has assembled a powerful team which can play top quality football hence explaining why A-League scouts have been sniffing around for weeks.
